I'm normally not a fan of private-eye novels but thought I'd give this one a try. The storyline--about a woman investigating the death of her former lover--seemed bland, but a perusal of the book suggested I'd be in for an entertaining read. The main character I should mention is a taekwondo instructor, which I found interested, and the further I got into the book, the more I found myself drawn into the character's lives and what secrets lurked behind the scenes--the ending caught me totally by surprise. The book is written in alternating chapters of present and past, which took me some time for me to get used to but once you do it's an easy read, with a rhythm that is even lyrical. Mallory Petersen isn't one of those female investigators who solves a crime, then goes home to sit around reading with a cat curled on her lap. This crime buster also runs a successful martial arts academy, which appears to do as much toward paying her bills as her PI practice does. Along the way she finds time to tend to a possible budding relationship. Yep, Mallory is the complete package, smart enough and tough enough to be taken seriously, while displaying just enough ineptitude to allow the bad guys to continue operating long enough to bring the story to a satisfying conclusion.
Author Stephen Brayton himself runs a Tae Kwan Do school in the Midwest, so he is able to bring a great degree of credibility to the action scenes. Fight scenes play out in a logical, true to life fashion, without a lot of histrionic invincibility on the part of the heroine. Even though she ultimately comes out on top of the situation, there are times when she needs assistance from an outside source, and every once in a while she gets pretty banged up herself.
Mallory is a likable and believable character, abetted in her adventures by an able supporting cast, and Mr. Brayton has hinted publicly that we will be seeing more of her adventures. The next one can't come too soon for me.
Not that long ago I blogged a review about a book—and character—I really liked, an action-packed story about an actress who wants to join the FBI. In this book we get a female detective/martial arts expert who not only turns out to be even more awesome, but is in a story that I’m calling one of the best books I’ve read so far this year.
Mallory is a six-foot blonde blue-eyed woman whom even the ladies want; when I saw she had Sherlock Holmes and Sam Spade as her inspirations, I was officially just in love as everyone else. The story is told not only in first person but flashback, relating the murder of a past lover to her new lover. No doubt this has to do with another book in the series I haven’t read, but the story could have been fine without the framing device. . . just not as funny.
The writing is superb, quite enjoyable. I am really liking this character, especially her sense of humor, how she can be so hard-bitten yet still soft and sensitive, which is rare to see in even a real-life six foot gorgeous blonde (as a photographer who works with models, take my word for it). Her only downside is her ego, which forces her to do some stupid things, but that seems to be a prerequisite for going-it-alone detectives. The setting of Des Moines also works well, a bit of revelation; it seems to be a lot like any city on the coasts or anywhere in between, with a beautiful botanical garden and dangerous slums.
I liked this so much I immediately wanted to see the other book, but according to the author this is in publishing limbo right now.
Really 4.5 stars, since I had a few issues with plot holes, minor typos, and technical explanations (how a stun gun works, exit wounds, etc.). Overall great writing style, much better than you would expect for genre fiction. Mallory is a PI who finds her boyfriend dead,and then finds out he had a lot of secrets - like the fact that he wasn't the upstanding citizen she thought he was. A little suspension of disbelief here - you'd think a PI would have checked up on her new love interest. Whatever. Mallory is determined to find his killer, and finds herself involved with gangs, drug dealers, and crooked cops.
The story is told in flashback, with Mallory narrating it to a new boyfriend. I don't think this is the best plot device, since you lose a lot of the urgency and immediacy of the escalating tension (which the author is otherwise very good at building). Also, you know ahead of time that a) the heroine survives unscathed and b) at least one of the bad guys doesn't. Mallory's new boyfriend Lawrence is constantly interrupting the narrative, to the point of annoyance (I got very irritated with Lawrence before the end). At least there is no confusing the narrated story with the present, as this author very clearly separates them with "Then" and "Now" headings. I wish more authors would use such simple but effective methods to delineate flashbacks.
Overall this is a good read. Mallory is little too hard-boiled at times for my taste, but I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries or police procedurals with a strong female lead. If you like the Kinsey Millhone series (A is for Alibi etc.) you would probably enjoy this book.
A very good read that kept my interest. I liked the way the author transitioned from present time to past times. The characters were strong and believable.
"Alpha" is Stephen L. Brayton's second novel with heroine Mallory Petersen. Her story feels reminiscent of Robert B Parker's character private eye extraordinaire Spencer. Like P.I. Spencer, Miss Petersen sees things black, white and gray. The reader observes the right way and the Petersen way in which she resolves her cases.
Mr. Brayton's format of Now. . . and Then. . . in the "Alpha" story gives the reader an opportunity to catch their breath between action scenes.
"Alpha" introduces the reader to many characters we want to follow in more Mallory Petersen and "Night Shadows" novels.
We want more Mallory, Lawrence, Darren, and Harry Reznik. PLEASE.
